ChessVideos.TV Member of the Week: Zibbit!
This week we're featuring Zibbit! He's one of the two moderators of the Master Hangout, and is an FM from Iceland. He's made a number of entertaining analysis videos, and recently recorded his first live commentary. Here's our interview:
How did you get into chess?
I originally went to a local chess club around 9 or 10 years old with my uncle who is 2 years older than me. I also did well playing against kids my age at school so I kind of did well and stuck around because of that.
How long have you been playing?
I've been playing around 22 years. Although I took a long break between 1994 and 2000 when I hardly played chess at all.
Who is your favorite player of all time?
I would have to say Kasparov but as far as players I like because of their style I also like looking at games by Karpov, M.Gurevich, Nikolic and Kramnik. These players play a style that I strive to play and somehow fits me.
Have any chess books had a major influence on your development as a player?
During my biggest rating jump I studied 3 books really hard: Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy - John Watson; Road to Chess Improvement - Yermolinski; Improve your Chess now - Tisdall. At least those books come to mind first if I am asked this question.
What is your best chess result?
I would have to say 3rd place in the Icelandic Championships in 2003 only behind two GM's. I have also made two IM norms and both of those tournaments I was really happy with.
Do you have a favorite chess game?
Not really...but put a gun to my head and I'd probably say Kasparov-Topalov.
Do you have a favorite chess quote?
It's in Icelandic and means something like 'nothing comes easy'. It's a more versatile phrase in Icelandic however ;-)
Bishop or Knight?
Definitely Knight! I dream about good knight vs bad bishop endgames.
How did you find out about CV.TV?
Kind of by accident. I think I saw a video on YouTube and followed a link in the description of the video.
Any other hobbies?
I play a lot of golf during the summer (hey I live in Iceland!!) and also I play soccer and basketball from time to time but not as much as when I was younger when I was playing with a league team.
Anything else we should know about you?
Big joker love watching good comedy shows like Seinfeld, Friends, Arrested Development, The Office (sorry British version only). Also hooked on several TV shows for instance Dexter, Lost, 24. Favourite movies are Office Space and Rounders.
I also love traveling but most of my traveling has been to chess tournaments. Been to Denmark, England, US, Turkey, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Gibraltar, Hungary, Czech Republic and France. I hope to add to the list as many as possible.
